Scale Microgrid Solutions To Develop Microgrid for Verano’s Maryland Cultivation Facility.

October 6, 2021, Ridgewood, New Jersey: Scale Microgrid Solutions to Develop Microgrid for Verano’s Maryland Cultivation Facility.

Leveraging world-class genetics and refined cultivation and processing methods, Verano produces superior cannabis products recognized for quality, consistency and experience. As a multi-state cannabis operator, they have a sprawling footprint with 11 cultivation and production facilities, 86 active retail locations, and plans for continued expansion in both retail and wholesale verticals.

Scale Microgrid Solutions (Scale) will be financing and building a state-of-the-art energy system for Verano’s facility located in Jessup, Maryland, just outside of Baltimore. The facility is heavily reliant on space conditioning for its medical cannabis cultivation and processing operations, and so to support these electric and cooling demands, Scale will own, operate and maintain a Combined Cooling, Heat and Power (CCHP) system.

The CCHP includes 2MWs of microturbine generators, paired with 800-ton absorption chillers to utilize the waste heat, and will run in-parallel with an existing 172 kW rooftop solar system. The integrated assets will be capable of islanding from the electric utility for resiliency operation.

Scale is working with E-Finity Distributed Generation (E-Finity) for the engineering, procurement, and construction of the power plant along with energy consulting firm NgenX who helped develop the project. To date, E-Finity, an exclusive Capstone Turbine distributor, has completed over 100 power generation projects and currently maintains over 750 microturbines throughout the United States’ east coast and the Caribbean. NgenX is an energy consulting firm that provides services and solutions to commercial and industrial customers through its coalition of strategic partners. Scale is proud to work with these established partners in the development of this project.

Scale executed its innovative short-form Microgrid Service Agreement (MSA) for this deal. This contract was executed in less than a month, which is significantly faster than the several month process common for the sector. This has ensured the project stay on time and on budget.

Ryan Goodman, Co-Founder and CEO of Scale Microgrid Solutions says, “We’re very excited to be working with Verano on their Maryland facility. It is estimated that the cannabis production industry makes up about one percent of national electricity use, and we believe the future of indoor agriculture relies on distributed energy in order to be more sustainable, scalable, and affordable. Scale is proud to partner with Verano and their forward-thinking team on this state-of-the-art energy system.”
