July 13, 2021, Ridgewood, New Jersey: Scale Microgrid Solutions Outfits an Impressive Energy Solution for Fifth Season Fresh Indoor Vertical Farm.

Scale Microgrid Solutions “Scale” has commissioned a microgrid for Fifth Season, a prominent leading edge vertical farming company, at their state-of-the-art facility in Pittsburgh, PA.

Fifth Season is creating a different kind of world for our food. The indoor farm uses 97% less land and up to 95% less water than traditional farming. In order to create the optimal indoor farming environment, Fifth Season needs to ensure cheap, clean and reliable power.

Scale has commissioned a microgrid system that allows Fifth Season to have resilience and reliability while also reducing their overall emissions and saving them money. The modular microgrid that Scale designed is a game-changing behind-the-meter system that utilizes a combination of 160 kW photovoltaic solar panels, 200 kW lithium ion batteries, and a 1,200 kW natural gas generator outfitted with advanced emissions control technology.

In addition to reducing the facility’s GHG emissions footprint by the equivalent of 39 passenger vehicles driven in a year, the system operates in various ancillary services to the electric grid to help save them money, and will enable mission critical operations to continue during utility outages.

“Our future depends on more efficient crop production. Fifth Season is paving the way for indoor farming and Scale is improving their energy efficiency and grid resilience, reducing their costs, and mitigating their greenhouse gas emissions. Our teams at Scale and Fifth Season share a mission to do right by our planet and we couldn’t have asked for a better partnership.” - Ryan Goodman, CEO and co-founder of Scale Microgrid Solutions.

The microgrid system is fully owned and operated by Scale and required $0 in up-front capital from Fifth Season. It’s projected to reduce the CO2 emissions of the farm by over 470,000 pounds per year.

“Our Super Stack solution provides unprecedented control and insights over energy usage inside our facility,” sayd Brac Webb, Fifth Season’s COO/CTO and co-founder. “By integrating our capabilities with Scale Microgrid’s capital-lite and flexible model, we are setting a new standard for energy efficiency and power resiliency.”
